Being a member of a 3000+ congregation can be quite daunting until you get plugged into a smaller group. One way to do this is to attend one of the many amazing adult Sunday morning Connecting Point classes offered at Central Church. If you are in your 20's- 40's and you are looking for a place where people get connected to study God's word, one class that you have to consider is Growing Together, taught by Jay Thompson and Brian Hicks. In this class you will learn the word of God and build lasting friendships with other people who love the Lord.
"In our class," said class mentor, Ellen Olford, "we want to accomplish three things: teach the word of God, encourage fellowship, and provide stability. We want to teach God’s word in a way that changes lives. When our members leave our class on Sunday, we want them to live their lives differently on Monday morning. We want to provide them with the tools that promote Godly living. In addition to helping members live godly lives we want to encourage fellowship between our members. We want people to get connected and help them develop lasting relationships with like-minded believers. Our class is like a family and we try to get together outside of the class to fellowship at least once a month. Some of our fellowship activities include: girl’s and guys night out, golf outings, bonfires, swimming parties, and summer barbeques. The final thing we want to accomplish is to provide an environment of stability. We want to provide our members with a strong foundation upon which they can grow together while they are building strong marriages, families and friendships."
Class member comments confirm that Jay and Brian are accomplishing the goals mentioned above. "I like the intimate relationships that I have developed as result of being in this class," said Patty Robbins. Another class member, Dr Laura Bishop said, "Growing Together is a great class where I have been able to meet and fellowship with many new people whom I might not have been able to meet if not for this class."
Jay and Brian are both raising young families themselves. Jay is married to Nicole and they have a daughter, Gracie Lyn. And Brian and Jennifer Hicks have two children, Ben and Abby. They are both dedicated to clear Biblical teaching and living out that teaching in focused service to Christ. Jay teaches the Bible courses and coaches at SBEC and leads a Central Church small group during the week. Brian works at Vaco as a CPA and recruiter and volunteers with Fellowship of Christian Athletes to help sponsor the Westwood High School football team. He is also on the board of Calvary Rescue Mission.
The Growing Together Sunday school class meets at 9:25 in the choir room and is comprised of primarily couples in their 20’s- 40’s; however, members of all ages and marital status are welcome.
